Historic Marker Program Guidelines

The Webster Historic Marker Program is a community pride outreach effort sponsored by the Webster Historical Commission to celebrate the historical heritage we want to preserve in Webster. The Historic House Marker Program is also a wonderful opportunity for owners of historic or architecturally significant structures to celebrate the history of their home, building or other historically significant structure.

The markers do not impose restrictions on properties. Date and name markers have long expressed distinction in historic communities and provided an excellent means of public education. The information on the marker defines the architectural and social history of the Town and the date reflects a period when the structure was constructed and/or significant.

How To Begin:

Gather information on the history of your building/structure and complete the Webster Historic Marker Application. Remember to provide the sources of the information with your application.

What To Look For:

The date of construction, use of the building over time, history and occupation of original owner (or subsequent significant owners), the name of the building, if any, and the architect or builder.

In researching their properties, applicants are advised to consult the following sources:

  • Local History Room, Gladys E. Kelly Public Library – 2 Lake Street, Webster, MA

How to order a Historical Marker?

What does the Marker say?

The Webster Historical Commission must approve the exact wording to be used on a marker in addition to approving the application itself. The Commission will provide alternative wording if additional research suggests. Each custom-made marker includes the date your building was built and displays the official title of the Webster Historical Commission. If the exact date cannot be determined, the word “circa” will be included on your marker. The Commission reserves the right to deny specific requests for special wording on markers.

Confirmation & Payment:

The Historical Commission reviews complete applications upon receipt, and discusses each application as early as possible at a regularly scheduled monthly meeting. The applicant will be notified if the application submitted and the specific wording is approved. At that time, payment must be submitted to the Commission. Upon receipt of payment, the marker will be ordered.

Payment of $100 by check or money order only. It should be made payable to the “Town of Webster” and can be mailed or dropped off to:

  • Webster Town Hall, c/o Webster Historical Commission, 350 Main Street, Webster, MA 01570

Historical Markers

House markers measure 12 inches high by 16 inches wide. They are painted white with black lettering on weather-resistant board and built to withstand outdoor conditions,. Holes are pre-drilled for installation.

Where should I place the Historic Marker?

The marker should be placed on the outside on the front of the building. It should be installed at eye level, facing the street. Care should be taken to minimize any confusion with the house number. If architectural features or landscaping make this placement impractical, markers may also be mounted at higher levels, including the second floor.

When To Expect The Marker:

The marker will be shipped directly to the applicant, typically 6-8 weeks after receipt of payment.

If my marker is damaged, lost or stolen can I order a replacement Marker?

Yes, replacement markers can be purchased.
